SPRINGFIELD – Sen. Mattie Hunter supported a measure to make cash, credit cards and other forms of currency acceptable payments for bail.
“If someone can pay for their bail, then they should not have to sit in jail because law enforcement only accept one form of currency,” said Hunter.
Senate Bill 2252 stems from an incident where a juvenile was arrested for a non-violent offense and had to sit in jail over the weekend because the credit card machine was not working.
There is currently no statutory requirement regarding the methods of payment that must be accepted for bail.
Senate Bill 2252 passed the Senate 56-0 and now goes to the House for further consideration.
