Rep. Thapedi’s Chicago State funding bill goes to comittee

State Representative André Thapedi’s Save CSU Bill, HB 4393, will be heard before the Higher Education Committee on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016 at 4pm in Springfield.

HB 4393 appropriates $25 million dollars from various State funds to the Board of Higher Education for the purpose of distributing grants to colleges and public universities.

The funds are specifically allocated to those community colleges and public universities with at least a 75% minority student enrollment to prevent further layoffs and as in the case of Chicago State University, closure at these schools.

The Higher Education Committee will debate the bill and hear testimony regarding the need for the appropriation from students impacted by the lack of a state budget. If the bill passes, the funds would go to City Colleges of Chicago, Morton College, Prairie State College, South Suburban College and Chicago State University based on

2014 enrollment data. Visit ilga.gov for live audio and video of the House Higher Education Committee hearing in Room C-1 of the Stratton Building at 4:00pm on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016.
