CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Champaign, issued the following statement in response to Governor Bruce Rauner’s second State of the State address:
“With the unprecedented amount of turmoil that our state is currently facing, from challenges in improving education, boosting the economy and protecting critical programs that are currently suffering, I expected Governor Rauner to use his State of the State Address to bring us closer to passing a responsible budget.
“Millions of Illinois residents rely on us as lawmakers to do the right thing on their behalf. We must work together to craft a spending plan that gets rid of wasteful spending, but also works to protect programs that many people simply cannot live without. The list of currently unfunded programs is too long to name, but each one is essential. So, I call on both the governor and the legislature to take action immediately.
“The only way that we are going to be able to do what is best for our communities is by working in a bipartisan manner. It will take compromise, but what our governor did today, made little progress in moving the budget conversation further, which should be our ultimate goal.”
